Sun Records & Wellingborough – The Concert That Changed Music Forever
On July 18, 1953, a young Elvis Presley stepped into the Memphis Recording Service at the Sun Records studio and recorded “My Happiness” and “That’s When Your Heartaches Begin.” He paid just $3.98 for a double-sided demo. No one knew then, but that moment marked the true start of rock ‘n’ roll.
Now in Wellingborough, this concert recreates those moments that launched Presley, Johnny Cash, Jerry Lee Lewis, Carl Perkins, Roy Orbison, Rufus Thomas, and many others into global fame. It’s more than a music show—it’s a tribute to those who shaped a generation.
The sounds of Sun Records were not just catchy tunes. They were a mix of blues, gospel, country, boogie, western swing, and hillbilly. Sam Phillips, the genius behind the studio, crafted this new sound. He didn’t care about race or background. He only cared about talent. Under his direction, hits like “That’s Alright Mama,” “Blue Suede Shoes,” “Great Balls of Fire,” and “I Walk the Line” were born.
